Latest Spy Gadget Introduced by the CIA: Your House

As if the brain-numbing effects of TV programming were not horrible enough, the CIA has openly admitted that it would like to use what many refer to as the “idiot box” as a bona fide surveillance tool.

The increasingly interconnected nature of the gadgets in our households now forms a network of information that continuously leaks into the ether our personal preferences, ideas, plans, and desires. It is a framework that any intelligence agency would drool over.

One can hear CIA director, David Petraeus, practically giggle with thanks when he states that people have essentially “bugged themselves” in their own homes. And, like any good spy agency, they are prepared to exploit it.

The exponential growth of supercomputers is now combining with an array of small, cheap, low-power chips that form the heart of a processing network that can monitor and remotely control any device, from TVs to appliances, light bulbs, just about anything that connects to the Internet, or can be read through radio waves.

‘Transformational’ is an overused word, but I do believe it properly applies to these technologies,’ said Petraeus.

‘Particularly to their effect on clandestine tradecraft. Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters – all connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing.’ (Source)

Petraeus of course left out of his discussion to the venture capital firm to which he was speaking, that this type of opportunistic domestic spying by the CIA is completely unconstitutional, but of course the U.S. government has a long and sordid history of spying on its own citizens whenever it feels the need to. Now, as the lines have blurred in the War on Terror, the CIA has been staking an increasing claim upon American soil as part of its overall battlefield to thwart foreign invasion. CIA cooperation with local police departments in an “advisory” role has been ongoing, as is the case with the NYPD’s now ultra hi-tech surveillance city equipped with full-fledged military capability. One of the principal designers bringing total surveillance from the streets outside through your front door via a new “architecture for a digital world” is ARM. They offer an array of products that enable full-time wireless connectivity of home devices, as well as smart phone technology like automatic mobile payments. As stated in a recent blog post, they are offering technologies that are being increasingly demanded by consumers:

Always on, always connected devices are now ubiquitous with the growing demands for higher data-rate wireless broadband connections driving an ever larger demand for wireless connectivity. According to the GSA in 2011 global mobile traffic grew 133% and Cisco expects the number of mobile connected devices to exceed the world’s population in 2012. Consumers expect seamless connectivity at home and on the move coupled with power efficient long battery life operation.

Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2012 brought some great announcements from ARM Partners showcasing wireless connectivity solutions that work to meet the ever growing demand for power efficient, high bandwidth connections.

True, people continue to be duped by convenience and hi-tech gadgetry into funding their own prison. However, this latest admission by the CIA shows that their intentions go way beyond the latest trend or fad, and aims directly at the heart of our human desire for progress. We need to alert the companies that have partnered with this authoritarian government that it is wholly unacceptable to permit a surveillance grid to be a built-in consequence of our technological advancement.

CIA Home Invasion: Smart TVs and the ‘Internet of Things’

Recently, CIA Director David Petraeus made headlines with a speech given at the summit for In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture capital firm. In this talk, Petraeus discussed the emerging “internet of things” and the implications it will have for increased levels of surveillance. Petraeus explained that, because of the rise of gadgets which are connected and controlled by apps, intelligence agencies will no longer need to place spy devices inside your home – you will do it for them.

In conjunction with a recent unveiling of a new low-powered computer chip by ARM, one of the world’s largest chip companies, the fact is virtually every piece of electronic equipment (including appliances) can be controlled via apps and Internet-based systems. It is for this reason that Petraeus stated that the CIA will be able to read these devices via the Internet and even radio waves outside of the home.

Petraeus further stated,

He also added, “the latter now going to cloud computing, in many areas greater and greater supercomputing, and, ultimately heading to quantum computing.”

Of course, it is well-known that the CIA or any other government agency is admitting to such a level of capability, the truth is that this technology has been available for many years, even tested and perfected long before the first hints were given to the general public.

But perhaps just as alarming as Petraeus’ statements is the recent announcement regarding the new models of Samsung televisions currently being rolled out on the market. Indeed, if these new products are not a full blast initiation into the world of George Orwell’s 1984, then they are, at the very least, half way there.

This is because Samsung’s new line of LED HDTV’s will now include built-in, internally wired HD cameras, face tracking and speech recognition capabilities, and twin microphones. In the 2012 8000-series plasmas, the cameras and microphones are built directly into the screen bezel. The 7500 – 8000ES-series TV’s, however, will have the cameras permanently attached to the top of the set.

Obviously, the new TV’s, with their ability to access the Internet, will be connected to Samsung’s own software, but the sets will also be compatible with “third party apps” in much the same manner as the appliances mentioned above by Petraeus.

These TV’s, via the built-in camera and face recognition software, locate and record the faces of viewers while storing this information within the software for future use. The idea is that the software, after logging the different faces into the program, can then “personalize the experience” for the individual viewers.

The TV’s also come equipped with the ability to listen and respond to voice commands. Naturally, the built-in microphones must be active in order to use this feature.

It should also be noted that these features, unlike the add-on accessories that have come with television sets up to this point, cannot be removed simply by unplugging a device by its cord or USB cable. Again, the devices are built-in as part of the system itself.

As Gary Merson of HD GURU writes, these new “features” bring with them some important privacy concerns.

What concerns us is the integration of both an active camera and microphone. A Samsung representative tells us you can deactivate the voice feature; however this is done via software, not a hard switch like the one you use to turn a room light on or off.

During our demo, unless the face recognition learning feature was activated, there was no indication as to whether the camera (such as a red light) and audio mics are on. And as far as the microphone is concerned there is no way to physically disconnect it or be assured it is not picking up your voice when you don’t intend it to do so.
Merson also lists several questions about just how much data is collected and how that data is intended to be used. He asks:

Can Samsung or Samsung-authorized companies watch you watching your Samsung TV?
Do the televisions send a user ID or the TV’s serial number to the Samsung cloud whenever it has an Internet connection?
Does Samsung cross reference a user ID or facial scan to your warranty registration information, such as name, address, etc.?
Can a person or company listen to you, at will, via the microphone and Internet connection?
Does Samsung’s cloud store all this information? How secure is this extremely personal data?
Can a hacker intercept this data or view you via the built in camera?
Can a third-party app program do any of the above?
Exactly what information does the TV send to Samsung or other parties?
Does Samsung intend to sell data collected by its Smart TV owners, such as who, what and when one is viewing?
Of course, all of these questions are completely legitimate. However, they still fall short of some of the bigger issues involved with the introduction of the new models.

Yet, if the very idea of cameras and microphones embedded in their TV’s does not prevent the consumer purchasing these new sets to begin with, the fact that the ability to “deactivate” the system is wholly inadequate should add further motivation to abstain from the new Samsung models.

As Merson mentions, the cameras cannot be removed as they are built directly in as part of the set. The only available means to avoid the camera facing the viewers is to manually change the angle of the camera to point upward toward the ceiling in the case of the LED sets. In the plasma models, the camera can be “re-aimed to capture objects in the rear of the TV according to a Samsung spokesperson.”

But although the cameras can be shifted manually, there is no such guarantee that the voice recognition software and the built-in microphones have truly been turned off. This is because there is no manual shut-off option – the microphone can only be silenced by using Samsung’s own software. This, of course, leaves the user only the trust they hold in the electronics manufacturer as a guarantee.

I don’t know about you, but the word of a major corporation, coming on the heels of an announcement by the CIA Director that the agency will soon be spying on us through our ordinary household appliances, is simply not good enough.

For instance, even if the cameras are turned to face another direction, what guarantees do we have that there is no secondary device located somewhere else inside the TV? This might sound far-fetched at first, but, even so, Samsung is doing nothing to allay these concerns. In fact, it took some amount of controversy before they even released part of their privacy agreement, even though the TV’s have been on the shelves for weeks. A notable section of the agreement reads:

We reserve the right to share all Personal Data and non-Personal Data with any company within the Samsung Electronics group of companies, or with any other company that operates under the Samsung brand. … Each of the Samsung Group Companies will use your information in accordance with their own independent privacy practices.

Notice that the terms “Personal Data” and “non-Personal Data” are not defined.

You also have to agree to the following statement in order to download your owner’s manual (since Samsung has stopped printing them).

Samsung assumes no responsibility, and shall not be liable, in connection with whether any such products or services will be appropriate, functional or supported for the Samsung products or services available in your country.
Could “appropriate” uses include that of surveillance? We have yet to know the answer to this question because Samsung refuses to answer it.

Furthermore, in order to “deactivate” the Smart TV microphone, you must use the Samsung software which, in turn, must log in to the Samsung Cloud in order to be utilized. Therefore, the Cloud exists as a virtual backdoor that leads directly to the TV set in your living room, microphones and all. Since the Cloud is merely part of the Internet, this leaves the innermost parts of your home easily accessible to hackers and, even more concerning, to the government.

This is nothing to scoff at. The fact is that the government, not to mention corporations interested in data marketing, have a vested and concerted interest at acquiring, storing, and centralizing data belonging to every human being both within and without their borders. Indeed, the accessibility of such data is already at the fingertips of whatever agency wishes to take advantage of it. This is a program which they are no doubt already implementing.

As I wrote in my article, “New Report: ‘Recording Everything’ Details How Governments Can Shape The Dynamics Of Dissent,” within the next few years, it will be possible for the intelligence wing of the U.S. government to collect, store, and centralize every type of data in existence on every human being in the country, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for one year for a total cost ranging in the few hundred thousands. And this is only what has been announced. It doesn’t include the secret black projects that currently remain under wraps or the fact that these programs have been ongoing for years.

Not only that, but with the open desire by the U.S. government to create a Total Information Awareness network, as well as the legal infrastructure such as the Patriot Act and other Big Brother legislation, a climate has been created where all of the data acquired by Smart TVs will inevitably be soaked into this government network. Not only that, the snooping infrastructure is such that one can assume that every piece of information that finds its way into the Cloud will not eventually find its way to a centralized government database, but will do so immediately.

The fact is, while even those few individuals who are still concerned with their privacy complain about their constant loss of it, the all-too-familiar warning of our descent into a world spoken of in George Orwell’s 1984 is often repeated ad nauseum. However, the truth is that the warnings of our becoming an Orwellian police state someday “in the near future” can now cease to be uttered.

The time for worry over the United States becoming a society of total surveillance has passed. The truth is, whether the average American will admit it or not, the United States already is an Orwellian society.

At least we now know the reason why the Federal government mandated all televisions to go digital.

Owe The IRS? Bill Would Suspend Passport Rights For Delinquent Taxpayers

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A bill authored by a Southland lawmaker that could potentially allow the federal government to prevent any Americans who owe back taxes from traveling outside the U.S. is one step closer to becoming law.

Senate Bill 1813 was introduced back in November by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Los Angeles) to “reauthorize Federal-aid highway and highway safety construction programs, and for other purposes” .

After clearing the Senate on a 74 – 22 vote on March 14, SB 1813 is now headed for a vote in the House of Representatives, where it’s expected to encounter stiffer opposition among the GOP majority.

In addition to authorizing appropriations for federal transportation and infrastructure programs, the “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act” or “MAP-21″ includes a provision that would allow for the “revocation or denial” of a passport for anyone with “certain unpaid taxes” or “tax delinquencies”.

Section 40304 of the legislation states that any individual who owes more than $50,000 to the Internal Revenue Service may be subject to “action with respect to denial, revocation, or limitation of a passport”.

The bill does allow for exceptions in the event of emergency or humanitarian situations or limited return travel to the U.S., or in cases when any tax debt is currently being repaid in a “timely manner” or when collection efforts have been suspended.

However, there does not appear to be any specific language requiring a taxpayer to be charged with tax evasion or any other crime in order to have their passport revoked or limited — only that a notice of lien or levy has been filed by the IRS.

Boxer vowed last week to push House Republicans to pass the bipartisan transportation bill that would keep the Highway Trust Fund from going bankrupt.

“Thousands of businesses are at stake, and eventually we are talking about nearly three million jobs at stake,” she said in a statement. “There are many people on both sides of the aisle in the Senate who want to get our bill, MAP-21, passed into law, and I am going to do everything I can to keep the pressure on the Republican House to do just that.”

In regards to the Hutaree Militia, those of you who have been with us a long time will remember a little over 2 years ago, our lives got turned upside down by the National and local media over our music being used in training videos by the Hutaree, like the follow one;

That Monday morning I started getting calls from several of the presstitute outlets like FOX, CNN, ABC wanting someone from the band to come up to their New York studios. We declined at the time, because we didnt want any poker Face members faces to be used over and over again in a purposefully negative light.

We endured constant negative attacks, and the printed libel from ADL quotes, by the lamestream press for a total of 6 front page articles. What our sin was, was to declare that in America today, YOU ARE STILL INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. We also had a couple of visits by our local eF Bee Eye office, who turned out to be friendly and polite. They just wanted to know how well we knew the hutaree and when was our last contact with them. They also asked us about another group who would be making the headlines soon. In the end the FBI bought a copy of our last disc PEACE OR WAR. First time the Federal government has ever supported Poker Face in anyway…. hahaha
Anyway, in the end, Poker Face was RIGHT. We called it entrapment and the Hutaree case was pure unadulterated BS for what it was back then, and Judge Roberts saw the same thing last week in dismissing all of the charges and freeing these folks who had been in prison for 2 years. Remember it was a confidential informant placed there by the freedom haters of the ADL/SPLC. These outfits are UnAmerican and traitorous organizations running roughshod over America and her freedoms. They need to be financially destroyed and shut down once and for all. Morris Sleeze Dees and Abe APEMAN Foxman need to be investigated for crimes against America. Morris Sleeze has yet to be investigated and jailed for his role in bringing over the agent provacateur German Jew and hebrew speaking Andreas Strassmeier who was the person who pulled off OKC in 1995 and then blamed it on the patsy Tim McVeigh(or was it Tom mcVay as it was spelled in the book FINAL JIHAD written by OK governors brother Martin Keating 4 years before the event).

Hutaree Militia Members Acquitted
Apologies Expected From Media & Politicians

Nearly two years ago, to the day, members of the Hutaree militia were arrested and accused of a grand plot to kill police officers sparking a chain reaction that would lead to the overthrow of the United States government. We called bullshit from day one. Today, U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts agreed with us as all 9 members were acquitted of “conspiring to commit sedition, or rebellion, against the U.S. and conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction. Other weapons crimes tied to the alleged conspiracies also were dismissed.”
When the news was breaking back in 2010, Poker Face immediately issued a Press Release stating in part:
“Members of Poker Face do not condone the actions for which the nine members of Hutaree are being charged.
We continue to reserve judgment on the 9 detained militia members until due process can prove innocence or guilt in this matter.
While we do not consider all law enforcement officers and state officials to be corrupt, Poker Face does continue to consider government duplicity …”
Citing a link from the Hutaree website and a training video sporting one of our songs, the local media started reporting on how Poker Face was tied to this “extremist group.” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was braying about how dangerous this organization was. The national media was conjuring images of American style al-Qaeda and tossing out buzz words like “homegrown terrorists” and “seditious conspiracy.” And, Poker Face was trying to remind everyone how, during the Clinton years, the Federal Government and the media tried to pull this same type of crap with Richard Jewell as well as with a militia group in Georgia. The major difference between then and now is that Hutaree members spent 2 years in jail whereas Richard Jewell won a 15 million dollar plus judgment for having his name dragged through the mud.
While the merits of free speech in this case could be debated for years to come, what we truly find disturbing is that the government was willing to take a person with a history of drug and alcohol problems, who had fired a gun at his own wife and attempted suicide, and injected him into a supposedly violent and potentially lethal situation in order to “find” evidence in exchange for a boatload of money.
What’s even more disturbing is that the government gets away with what can only be construed as entrapment. Taking that into consideration, it is our belief that there was a political undercurrent in play. With the recent exposure of Operation Fast & Furious, we must ask whether the Justice Dept was trying to use the Hutaree incident in order to provoke a reaction from other militias nationwide. Luckily for us all, the more established groups did not bite. Had they responded with force, rest assured we would have seen some sort of oppressive legislation, ala the National Defense Authorization Act, abruptly brought forth. Look at how the Patriot Act was just waiting in the wings. It was introduced and passed in record time with virtually no members of Congress actually taking the time to read it. Also, keep in mind that just a few short years before this militia nonsense, the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act failed to become law.
With politics in mind, let us look back on the months following the Hutaree arrests. 2010 was an election year. In our hometown, both the Republican incumbent for the U.S. House of Representatives, Charlie Dent, and the Democratic challenger, John Callahan were taking swipes at the Independent candidate, Jake Towne, due to Poker Face’s scheduled performance in support of his campaign. Callahan was calling us “disgusting” despite kissing our collective asses years earlier when our community organizing abilities favored his first electoral push to become Mayor of Bethlehem. Dent was on Bobby Gunther Walsh’s show saying WE were calling for people to shoot cops.
As the summer and the political race heated up, Bobby Gunther Walsh, along with the local news station and both local papers, were beguiled by one of the worst offenders of free speech and civil rights, the Anti-Defamation League. We will give credit to the Express Times for at least printing our opinion that the ADL is linked to terrorist organizations, albeit in a tiny obscure part of the version only available on the web. But, it’s a start. Unfortunately, it is still a far cry from exposing the corruption and illegal activities that define the true nature of these “non-profit” charlatans.
Well, here is everybody’s chance to come clean.
Poker Face was right all along. The Hutaree was not a threat.
The government was a threat.
And, the only threat we pose is through song and word in order to expose those who will use their power to exploit and enslave those who have none.
If any of the local media outlets have a stitch of morality and are willing to put out the full story and the facts surrounding it, it would be honorable, it would be greatly appreciated, and it would go a long way in alleviating many people’s concerns of media bias.
If you are not interested in following up and publicizing the facts of this story, you should be ashamed of yourselves and are hereby formally invited to kiss our asses.

Michiganistan: Christians Must Waive Rights

A city described as a “serial violator” of religious rights that has been ordered to pay tens of thousands of dollars in attorneys’ fees in cases prompted by its actions against Christians has come up with a solution – demanding that people waive all their rights.

The demand has prompted another legal action, by the Thomas More Law Center on behalf of a controversial pastor who preaches on radical Islam, Shariah, same-sex “marriage” and other hot-button topics.

Sound Money Act of 2012

Last week the House State Affairs Committee of the Idaho Legislature sent to the amending order a Sound Money bill. This bill is called the “Idaho Constitutional Money Act of 2012.” The purpose of the bill is to remove barriers and provide statutory authority for those in Idaho who may choose to do business with gold and silver coin. The bill will declare gold and silver coins currently minted by the United States Mint as legal tender in Idaho.

The authority to conduct business in gold and silver coin already exists at the federal level in the United States Code. You can find the statute at 31U.S.C. 5118 (d)(2). What I am sure some will find surprising is that our states are required to do business in gold and silver coin as mandated by the United States Constitution.

“No state shall…. Make anything but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts:….” United States Constitution, article I, section 10, clause 1.

If we were obeying the Constitution, all state business would be conducted in gold and silver coin. But most of us have forgotten our Constitution, and very few of us push back enough to slow the process down of America’s transformation from limited government to big government. Reliance on fiat money is necessary to support big government.

Vices Or Crimes

I.

Vices are those acts by which a man harms himself or his property.

Crimes are those acts by which one man harms the person or property of another.

Vices are simply the errors which a man makes in his search after his own happiness. Unlike crimes, they imply no malice toward others, and no interference with their persons or property.

In vices, the very essence of crime — that is, the design to injure the person or property of another — is wanting.

It is a maxim of the law that there can be no crime without a criminal intent; that is, without the intent to invade the person or property of another. But no one ever practises a vice with any such criminal intent. He practises his vice for his own happiness solely, and not from any malice toward others.

Unless this clear distinction between vices and crimes be made and recognized by the laws, there can be on earth no such thing as individual right, liberty, or property; no such things as the right of one man to the control of his own person and property, and the corresponding and coequal rights of another man to the control of his own person and property.

For a government to declare a vice to be a crime, and to punish it as such, is an attempt to falsify the very nature of things. It is as absurd as it would be to declare truth to be falsehood, or falsehood truth.

II.

Every voluntary act of a man’s life is either virtuous or vicious. That is to say, it is either in accordance, or in conflict, with those natural laws of matter and mind, on which his physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being depend. In other words, every act of his life tends, on the whole, either to his happiness, or to his unhappiness. No single act in his whole existence is indifferent.

Furthermore, each human being differs in his physical, mental, and emotional constitution, and also in the circumstances by which he is surrounded, from every other human being. Many acts, therefore, that are virtuous, and tend to happiness, in the case of one person, are vicious, and tend to unhappiness, in the case of another person.

Many acts, also, that are virtuous, and tend to happiness, in the case of one man, at one time, and under one set of circumstances, are vicious, and tend to unhappiness, in the case of the same man, at another time, and under other circumstances.

III.

To know what actions are virtuous, and what vicious — in other words, to know what actions tend, on the whole, to happiness, and what to unhappiness — in the case of each and every man, in each and all the conditions in which they may severally be placed, is the profoundest and most complex study to which the greatest human mind ever has been, or ever can be, directed. It is, nevertheless, the constant study to which each and every man — the humblest in intellect as well as the greatest — is necessarily driven by the desires and necessities of his own existence. It is also the study in which each and every person, from his cradle to his grave, must necessarily form his own conclusions; because no one else knows or feels, or can know or feel, as he knows and feels, the desires and necessities, the hopes, and fears, and impulses of his own nature, or the pressure of his own circumstances.

IV.

It is not often possible to say of those acts that are called vices, that they really are vices, except in degree. That is, it is difficult to say of any actions, or courses of action, that are called vices, that they really would have been vices, if they had stopped short of a certain point. The question of virtue or vice, therefore, in all such cases, is a question of quantity and degree, and not of the intrinsic character of any single act, by itself. This fact adds to the difficulty, not to say the impossibility, of any one’s — except each individual for himself — drawing any accurate line, or anything like any accurate line, between virtue and vice; that is, of telling where virtue ends, and vice begins. And this is another reason why this whole question of virtue and vice should be left for each person to settle for himself.

Understanding Slave Mentality

In the initial stages of nearly every recorded tyranny, the saucer eyed dumbstruck masses exhibit astonishing and masterful skill when denying reality.  The facts behind their dire circumstances and of their antagonistic government become a source of cynical psychological gameplay rather than a source of legitimate concern.  Their desperate need to maintain their normalcy bias creates a memory and observation vacuum in which all that runs counter to their false assumptions and preconceptions disappears forever.  It is as if they truly cannot see the color of the sky, or the boot on their face.  The concrete world of truth becomes a dream, an illusion that can be heeded or completely ignored depending on one’s mood.  For them, life is a constant struggle of dissociation, where the tangible is NOT welcome…

This is the problem that we in the Liberty Movement deal with most often in our writings and films.  Our confrontation with willful ignorance has been epic, even by far reaching historical standards.  The gains in social awareness have been substantial, and yet the obstacles are incredible.  Unprecedented.  As an activist trend, we have an almost obsessive drive to draw back the curtain so that the public has at least the opportunity to see what is on the other side.  Unfortunately, there is another danger that must be taken into account…

It is one thing to bear witness to the rejection of truth in our time and the oblivious attitudes of many towards the growth of totalitarianism.  Eventually, though, a second phase in the development of oligarchy arises.  I am speaking of the point at which tyranny becomes so blatant that the skeptics have to acknowledge its existence, but after doing so, they choose to rationalize it as necessary.  Yes, there are many in this world that will laugh at the prospect of the Orwellian nightmare only to happily embrace it when it arrives in full color.
